National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act (NGER Act)The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGERs) was passed on 29 September 2007. The NGERs Act introduces a single national reporting framework for the reporting and dissemination of information about the greenhouse gas emissions, greenhouse gas projects , and energy use and production of corporations. Under NGERs, businesses who are very large emitters of greenhouse gases will be required by law to measure and report their emissions to the government. The first annual reporting period began on 1 July 2008 and many organisations are already captured by the mandatory reporting requirements. There are two types of thresholds at which corporations are required to participate – facility thresholds and corporate thresholds. Each type of threshold has a greenhouse gas and an energy threshold. If a corporation exceeds any one or more of the four thresholds for each year, registration is required. The threshold for reporting is presently 25,000t for facility thresholds and 125,000t for corporate thresholds dropping to 50,000t by the year 2012. Organisations that exceed these thresholds must report their:
Importantly, the carbon sequestration occurring in reforestation projects can be considered under NGERs reporting and potentially used to reduce reportable emissions totals. For further information on the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act visit the Department of Climate Change. |
